MTS ensures network coverage along the Kerala coastline 2016

MTS on Tuesday said that its efforts in ensuring network coverage along the Kerala coastline have been lauded by DoT officials. As part of the ‘E-Samudra’ project backed by Department of Telecom (DoT), an android application has been developed for fishermen which will provide them with weather and disaster related alerts.

The project will be implemented from second half of November and is also backed by Department of Fisheries.

Fishermen will be able to get information from the app regarding their distance from the shore and their position in the sea during fishing. The app will also provide details including fisherman’s distance from international boundaries, potential fishing areas and nearest harbour.

MTS in 2014 had done network optimizations to enhance coastline coverage along Kerala for the benefit of fishermen. Following this, DoT has asked all telecom providers to ensure cellphone coverage up to 20-25 km off the Kerala coast as part of the E-Samudra project.

“Earlier, there was no coverage in the sea as the telecom providers wouldn't install antennas towards the direction of sea. Now, one telecom provider has ensured coverage,” said DoT officials. "Enhanced coverage up to maritime borders has been extended for both voice and data across the Kerala coast through 800 Mhz frequency band," they added.

MTS India claims to being the only telecom provider to ensure network coverage along the Kerala coastline.
