Reliance Jio Infocomm amassed nearly 4 million additional subscribers in April, the highest among all carriers, taking its base to over 112 million for the month. The Mukesh Ambani owned new carrier had a partially enhanced its share of the market to 9.58%, from 9.29% in March.
While the April addition of 3.87 million has been lower than March’s 5.83 million subscribers, the carrier held on to its No 4 position in the market, fighting it out with Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular that sustained their top three positions in that order, with 23.54%, 17.86% and 16.69% shares, respectively.
According to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, net addition of 4.41 million customers happened in April, even when Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices and Telenor lost more than 1 million each, while Aircel lost 0.3 million in the month.
Trai data showed that Jio was also the top in the wireless broadband service provider with 112.55 million customers, followed by Bharti Airtel with 52.25 million, Vodafone with 39.76 million and Idea Cellular with 24.09 million.
Reliance Jio’s free offers launched in September 2016 had helped notch up 100 plus million subscribers in 170 days, many from rival networks, starting a fierce competition in the sector that has seen a consolidation in the wake of the company’s entry.
The new entrant launched Prime membership, after six months of free offers, which gave its subscribers discounts on app usage and data benefits for a year on a one-time recharge of Rs 99. It rolled out the Dhan Dhana Dhan offer after that, which had minimum recharges of around Rs 300 for benefits for three months.
Jio maintains that it has 72 million Prime subscribers out of the total, as of March 31. In the March ending quarter of FY 17, the incumbents have blamed Jio as the prime reason for the drag in their numbers. In April 4.96 million subscribers opted for number portability, taking the total requests number to 277.7 million till April 2017 end, since January 2011.
