Airtel download speed doubles, Reliance Jio speed reduced by more than half in January

Data published on Trai's website on Thursday showed average download 4G speed on the network of Bharti Airtel highest in January at 8.42 megabit per second (mbps), pipping 4G entrant Reliance Jio’s network speed that reduced by more than half to 8.34 mbps in January from 18.14 mbps peak speed in December.

Bharti Airtel’s average download 4G speed has doubled in January from 4.68 mbps in December. The telco’s network has shown highest download speed thrice since September.

Average download speed on Vodafone and Idea Cellular networks have also increased in January over previous month. According to data published on the regulator’s analytics portal, speed on Vodafone increased to 6.8 mbps from 6.7 mbps, while speed on Idea’s network increased to 6.62 mbps from 5 mbps.

BSNL network’s average download speed declined to 3.16 mbps in January from 3.42 mbps in December, Trai data revealed.

Trai, with the help of MySpeed application, collects and computes speed of mobile data from subscribers across the country on real time basis.

Separately, Bharti Airtel has emerged as the fastest internet service provider with 2.25 Mbps speed in Netflix’s ISP Speed Index in January, surpassing Spectranet, the previous leader, which has now moved to the second spot with 2.10 Mbps speeds. Spectranet witnessed a decline in its broadband speed which was earlier recorded at 2.34 Mbps.

A recent Credit Suisse report had also said that Sunil Bharti Mittal-led Airtel 4G offers the best download speeds at around 12Mbps, whileReliance Jio, Vodafone and Idea were close to each other at 7-8Mbps download speeds.
