Telecom operator Vodafone had an oops moment when Hindi film superstar Amitabh Bachchan tweeted that he could not send messages from his phone as they showed a failed status, but receiving them.was not an issue.
Amitabh Bachchan tweeted from his account @SrBachchan on Tuesday evening: “VODAFONE WE HAVE A PROBLEM ..!! ALL SEND MESSAGES COMING FAILED .. RECEIVING SMS BUT NOT GOING .. HHEEEELLLLPPPPP !!!”
Rival Jio promptly spotted the tweet and offered to send Bachchan a free Jio SIM card to his home and activate it via Aadhaar card. Reliance Jio replied to Bachchan on the social media platform within thirty minutes. “Sir, we would be happy to deliver a Jio SIM to you & activate it instantly through our Aadhaar based eKYC home delivery process,” it said.
In about half an hour after that, his Vodafone issue was resolved and the movie mogul tweeted about that as well.
Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio few months ago announced that they will do home delivery of SIM cards and getting Bachchan migrate from Vodafone would have been a big scoop for them.
The telecom rivalry between the four main operators - Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Jio has intensified with Jio offering free data and voice services in a bid to poach users from incumbents. It has resulted in price wars that has eroded revenue and profitability for all operators.
The operators are strengthening network, offering bundled services at reduced prices and rolling out digital apps to get more subscribers.
Interestingly, Bachchan 's son, Abhishek Bachchan was a brand ambassador for Idea Cellular and part of the' what an Idea Sirjee campaign '.
The consolidation in the price sensitive industry has mived up a notch with Idea and Vodafone announcing that they were in talks for a merger.
