Videocon to shut down its mobile services in india

Videocon Telecom will exit the telecom services business by shutting down services in Punjab circle from February 15 and has asked its 3 million customers to exhaust balance and port out to other operators before midnight of that day.

The company, which operates under Quadrant Televentures Limited, said in a notice on its website Tuesday that prepaid customers should exhaust their balance and postpaid customers should clear their dues, and move out to other carriers to ensure continuity of services.

“Quadrant Televentures Limited would be discontinuing mobile services with effect from midnight of February 15, 2017 in Punjab service area (entire state of Punjab including Chandigarh UT and Panchkula),” the company said in the notice, without giving any reasons for its abrupt decision to stop services.

The company has shut down services in six other circles - Bihar & Jharkhand, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (East) and Uttar Pradesh (West) – in May last year, after selling spectrum in 1800 Mhz band in these circles to Bharti Airtel for Rs 4,428 crore.

The deal came through after Videocon’s deal with Idea Cellular to buy spectrum in the same band in two key circles of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh (West), announced in November 2015 for Rs 3,310 crore, was called off last year.
